About Sustainability

Defining Sustainability

Council adopted a Sustainability Framework in January 2010, to guide Richmond’s transition to a sustainable community.  The Framework outlines the key long term economic, social and environmental priorities for our community’s development.

A History of Action on Sustainability
Throughout its history, the City of Richmond has sought to build a more environmentally sound, socially enriching, and prosperous community.  In 2007, the City adopted its Enhanced Corporate Sustainability Initiative, summarized in our document Charting our Path, available for download below.

Charting Our Path

By adopting the Enhanced Corporate Sustainability Initiative, the City committed to:

Developing the Sustainability Framework, to provide comprehensive, integrated guidance of the City’s strategies for pursuing a sustainable
Use Triple Bottom Line decision making, to make sure the City’s decisions account for economic, social and environmental factors.

In 2010, the City adopted the Sustainability Framework.  The high level priorities articulated in the Framework subsequently guided the development of Richmond’s 2041 Official Community Plan .
