Richmond's Natural Environment

The Fraser River

The Fraser River is British Columbia’s largest river and its watershed covers nearly a quarter of the province. The water passing around Richmond originates from headwaters as far as Mount Robson Park, over 700 kilometres away!

Fraser River Biology
The Fraser River is perhaps best known for its amazing salmon runs, where each year tens of millions of fish swim up the river to the streams where they were born.  Some interesting facts about the Fraser River include:

  • All five species of Pacific salmon call the Fraser River home, as well as steelhead and cutthroat trout.
  • White sturgeon similarly travel to the upper reaches of the watershed.
  • Nutrients and sediments are carried by the Fraser River for hundreds of kilometres and deposited in the estuary, creating the islands that form the City of Richmond – resulting in a unique and productive environment.
