About Youth Services

Youth DJThe City of Richmond strives for “Richmond to be the best place in North America to raise children and youth.”

Youth Services aims to address the recreational, social and cultural needs of Richmond youth aged 13 and up by offering a wide range of interactive and innovative programs and services for youth. These interactive and innovative opportunities are intentionally designed to build Developmental Assets.

This is achieved by:

  • Building relationships that are grounded in mentoring, role modelling and engagement;
  • Creating meaningful experiences;
  • Working with other agencies and services to support youth; and
  • Building developmental assets in youth.

40 Developmental Assets
The City has adopted the 40 Developmental Assets framework to develop and deliver youth programs and services.  The Assets have a tremendous influence on young people’s lives and choices.

Youth Service Plan
The 2015-2020 Youth Service Plan aims to create an environment that generates opportunities for Richmond’s youth to have a safe and healthy journey to adulthood. The plan identifies priority program and service areas for Richmond youth, and provides the City with a strategic approach to making decisions about youth-related matters over the next six years.

Roving Leader Program
The Roving Leader Program bridges youth participation towards positive activity and appropriate services designed to influence and increase the development of the 40 Developmental Assets.

Youth Development Coordinators
Youth Development Coordinators (YDCs) are based in community centres throughout Richmond and provide a wide variety of direct services to youth, including program planning, development and implementation and community resources sharing and building of partnerships.
