One of the most popular sections of Richmond Recreational Trail System is the West Dyke.

Located adjacent to Sturgeon Banks, the West Dyke offers some of the most spectacular views of the North Shore and Coastal Mountains to be found in Richmond. There are panoramic views to the west of the ocean, Gulf Islands and estuary, with views to the north of the Coastal Mountains and Vancouver International Airport. This is the ideal place for watching a late summer sunset, or early morning sunrise while walking or cycling the trail.

West Dyke Trail May 2005Sturgeon Banks is a 21,525 acre estuary located on the banks of the Fraser River and Strait of Georgia. It is an important part of the Pacific Flyway, with 1.4 million birds migrating through the area annually and provides excellent habitat for nesting birds. The long expanse of marsh that makes up Sturgeon Banks runs from Terra Nova in the north to Garry Point Park in the south, it is adjacent to the West Dyke Recreational Trail and extends west out into the Strait of Georgia. Visit this area often as the seasons change to view the landscape's transformation from lush, green marsh grasses to its sepia, honey toned winter colour and flocks of Snow Geese.

Terra Nova Rural Park and Natural Area
Terra Nova Natural AreaOne hundred years ago, Terra Nova, situated on the northwest corner of Lulu Island, was a rural farming and fishing community. The flavour of old, the sights, the salt tang of the sea and the sounds of wildlife have been preserved in two very special but different parks sites totalling over 100 acres.

Terra Nova Natural Area
Terra Nova Natural Area comprises 35 acres of old field grassland habitat with a perimeter trail and wildlife viewing platforms. The land was restored as a natural area in the 1990s and is a valuable conservation area that provides habitat and food to a variety of wildlife including owls, eagles, hawks, herons, snow geese, coyotes and raccoons.
