Make history by honouring those who preserve it Nominations sought for Richmond Heritage Awards

2016 May 26

Richmond’s rich heritage is one of the things that make the community such a special place. The annual Richmond Heritage Awards are an opportunity to take special notice of the heritage treasures all around us and those who work to preserve and celebrate our history. Nominations for the awards are now being accepted until Friday, June 10, 2016.

Richmond’s  buildings, landscapes, artifacts, and the people and their histories are all rich resources of our collective past.  The Richmond Heritage Awards annually recognize the special accomplishments of individuals and organizations who have contributed to preserving and promoting Richmond’s heritage.

Anyone may submit a nomination to the Richmond Heritage Commission.  Simply prepare a one-page summary describing the nominee and their contributions. The nomination can be for an individual or an organization. Your name, address and telephone number must be included as well as that information on the nominee. Submissions are accepted by email to Helen Cain, City of Richmond Heritage Planner, at hcain@richmond.ca or mail to the Richmond Heritage Commission c/o Policy Planning Department, Richmond City Hall, 6911 No. 3 Road, Richmond, BC, V6Y 2C1.

Some of the ways an individual or organization may earn special recognition are:

  • preservation, restoration, rehabilitation or adaptive reuse of a historic place, such as a building or structure, or conservation of a cultural heritage landscape;
  • promotion or awareness of local heritage through education, outreach or advocacy; or
  • contributions to local knowledge of heritage in public history or interpretation projects.

The annual Richmond Heritage Awards will be presented on Thursday, June 23, 2016 at the Leave Your Mark exhibit opening at Richmond Museum in the Richmond Cultural Centre located at 7700 Minoru Gate.

The Awards Jury will include members of the Richmond Heritage Commission and guest jurors.  All decisions of the jury are final.
