How will you Leave Your Mark?

13 June 2016

Local history and modern technology will combine to create an experiential examination of the marvellous and strange objects people have left for posterity in the Richmond Museum’s new exhibition, Leave Your Mark.

Opening Thursday, June 23, 2016 at 7:00 p.m. at the Richmond Cultural Centre, the new exhibition highlights include historic legacies from a wedding dress to a terracotta warrior, printing press and player piano. The exhibit also explores how evolving technologies have created new opportunities to leave different types of legacies, from vinyl records to digital music files.

“Leave Your Mark poses meaningful questions about what we have inherited from previous generations and what we want to leave for our grandchildren,” said Mayor Malcolm Brodie. “The City is very fortunate to have an extraordinary collection of artefacts and cultural heritage sites that have been preserved.”

Museum visitors will be able to make their mark on a graffiti wall, write their names using the Musqueam alphabet, take a surprising selfie in the gallery and post it to social media using the Museum’s exhibition hashtag #LeaveYourMark, add their own landmarks to a map of Richmond, try their hand at calligraphy and dive into a variety of interactive activities in the Discovery Area.

This exhibit supports the Richmond Museum’s goal of contributing to a broader understanding of the concept of community in an accessible everyday setting that everyone can enjoy and understand.

Leave Your Mark will run from Thursday, June 23, 2016 at 7:00 p.m. to March 2017 at the Richmond Museum, 7700 Minoru Gate (located in the Richmond Cultural Centre). Hours are 9:00 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. weekdays and 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. weekends. For more information about the Richmond Museum visit www.richmond.ca/culture/sites/museum.
