Celebrate Family Day at Richmond community facilities

Feb 2 2016

With dozens of activities planned, Richmond is once again celebrating Family Day in a big way on Monday, February 8. Choices for families of all ages, sizes and mixes include a family public skate at Minoru Arenas, building a hand-held boat at Britannia Shipyards and over 40 other programs and events to choose from. A musical performance of children’s classics by Mrs Lori at Cambie Community Centre is sure to be a hit with all family members so it’s recommended to arrive early for the 11:30 a.m. show. The Youth Art Challenge, also at Cambie Community Centre, will have teams of youth racing against each other and the clock to create the best painting.

Other highlights of the day include family Zumba classes at Hamilton and South Arm community centres; a Family Day pancake breakfast at Steveston; and 15 activities alone between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. at Thompson Community Centre. There are also plenty of open gym sessions for those families wanting to drop-in and play at Hamilton, South Arm, Steveston and Thompson community centres.

If you’re looking to work out alone or with a family member, Cambie, City Centre, Hamilton, South Arm, Steveston and Thompson fitness centres are open from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. for a workout. Total Fitness Pass holders are able to use their passes at any of the open centres on the public holiday for no extra fee.

As a warm up to Family Day, on Saturday, February 6, West Richmond Community Centre is hosting an all ages free pancake breakfast from 9:30 to 10:35 a.m. and arts and crafts activities from 9:30 a.m. to noon. At the Richmond Nature Park, families can team up and take on the Trash Trail Challenge scavenger hunt or search for the elusive Sasquatch to take a selfie with.

Also on Monday, February 8, the eighth annual Children’s Arts Festival will again feature top-quality, highly interactive artistic activities led by professional artists. All activities will be held at the Richmond Cultural Centre/Brighouse Library, with expanded activities throughout Minoru Plaza and Minoru Place Activity Centre. More information can be found at
