New ocean-themed summer camp for 6 to 9 year olds
15 June 2017
Budding marine biologists will earn how to protect and preserve our precious oceans in a unique new summer camp offered by Britannia Shipyards National Historic Site. The Ocean Adventurer Summer Camp, specifically designed for 6 to 9 year olds, runs Monday, July 10 through Friday, July 14, 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. aiming to make kids water champions.
Dr. Elaine Leung, marine biologist from the Sea Smart science education program, will guide children on a weeklong adventure that covers the marine environment, how to interact properly with marine mammals and some of the current issues impacting our oceans.
This program will educate and inspire children to better understand our dependence on the world’s waterways and how recycling can help keep rivers and oceans clean. Through fun, hands-on activities, beach combing and games, children will learn how even just one person can make a difference and that every effort at home and in the community can have far reaching effects.
This camp’s home base takes place on the Fraser River waterfront in the historic Seine Net Loft, recently transformed into an exhibit and educational interactive space. The new exhibit, Our Coastal Connection, highlights water stewardship and educational initiatives that began with local efforts of individuals and focuses on local stories of environmental heroes and community groups who are protecting the waterways.
The camp themes introduced throughout the week include: learning how sea mammals use sound waves to navigate and the impacts of manmade underwater noise; discovering how marine species are impacted by commercial fishing through by-catch and net entanglements; exploring sustainable seafood practices; and understanding the impacts on our oceans, lakes and rivers of plastic pollution; waste water and storm drains; and ocean acidification.
The cost is $350 per person. Register using course code 2015088 one of three ways: online at www.richmond.ca/register; by calling the Registration Call Centre at 604-276-4300, Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.; or in-person at Britannia’s Visitor Centre (5180 Westwater Drive).
