Opening Celebration

Richmond City Hall has seen over ten thousand visitors at various events beginning with the Official Opening on May 20, 2000. An incredible amount of time and energy was given by many groups, businesses and individuals to ensure the success of the related special events.

City Hall Opening EventsThe May 26th Millennium Charity Gala sponsored by the Richmond Foundation and the Richmond Sunset Rotary Club was attended by over 1200 guests. Net proceeds will support the beneficiaries of these organizations and the City of Richmond. On June 26, 2000 a cheque for $10,000 was presented to the Mayor and Council by representatives of both groups.

The Cenotaph was rededicated on June 6th. A candlelight ceremony involved veterans and youth from the City. This was followed by a laying of the wreath and a speech by Mayor Greg Halsey-Brandt. A Fieu de Joix acted as a finale followed by a March north on Number 3 Road.

The Cenotaph was re-furbished and installed very close to its original location after being in storage for several years. Several names were added and some corrected for spelling errors. Thanks to the Royal Canadian Legion Branch No 5 for coordinating this event and to the many other supporting cadet groups and agencies.
